Heirloom Hops Shines at the Virginia FAIRS Bullpen Competition
At Heirloom Hops, our commitment to preserving and promoting pre-Prohibition hops has always been at the heart of our mission. Nestled in the scenic landscape of Winchester, Virginia, our farm stands as a testament to traditional farming methods while embracing innovative approaches. This November, we had the honor of showcasing our dedication to agricultural innovation at the Virginia FAIRS Bullpen Competition in Virginia Beach.
A Family Affair
On November 23rd, our family packed up and made the journey to Virginia Beach, filled with anticipation and excitement. The Virginia FAIRS Bullpen Competition, a prestigious event focusing on "Agricultural and Forestry Innovation," promised to be an excellent platform to present our unique approach to hop cultivation. As we arrived at the venue, we were greeted by a vibrant community of fellow farmers, innovators, and enthusiasts, all eager to share their advancements and learn from each other.
Showcasing Heritage Hops
At Heirloom Hops, we specialize in growing pre-Prohibition hop varieties that have largely been forgotten in the modern era of brewing. These hops, once the cornerstone of American brewing, offer distinct flavors and aromas that contemporary brewers are rediscovering with enthusiasm. Our presentation highlighted not only the historical significance of these hop varieties but also the innovative techniques we employ to cultivate them sustainably.
The Competition
We competed against four other farmers and businesses, all vying for the $10,000 grand prize. The competition was fierce, with numerous presentations showcasing cutting-edge technologies and novel approaches to farming and forestry. Our entry stood out due to our unique blend of tradition and innovation. We demonstrated how our sustainable farming practices are not just preserving a piece of brewing history but are also paving the way for a more sustainable agricultural future.
A Finalist's Reward
Although we ultimately did not win the grand prize, we were honored to be named finalists, receiving $2,500 in recognition of our efforts. I had the privilege of presenting our farm and the idea of bringing back heirloom hops before a panel of judges and the public at the VA FAIRS Farmers Convention. This experience was invaluable, allowing us to network with like-minded individuals and receive feedback that will be crucial as we move forward.
Family Commitment
One of the most rewarding aspects of the competition was the opportunity to compete as a family. Our passion for heirloom hops is a family affair, and having the chance to present together underscored the deep personal commitment we have to our farm and its mission. The experience of working together towards a common goal, sharing our story, and engaging with the broader agricultural community was invaluable.
Looking Forward
Participating in the Virginia FAIRS Bullpen Competition was an incredible experience for Heirloom Hops. We were inspired by the innovative spirit of our fellow competitors and the supportive environment fostered by the event organizers. While we did not walk away with the top prize, the feedback and encouragement we received have only strengthened our resolve to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable hop cultivation.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the organizers of the Virginia FAIRS Bullpen Competition and to all the participants who made the event a memorable and enlightening experience. We look forward to applying the insights we gained and continuing our journey of innovation at Heirloom Hops.
Stay tuned for more updates from our farm and exciting developments in the world of heritage hops!
